Concrete Curbing Installation
Concrete curbing installation is a critical part of any parking and sidewalk area. While many people don’t give concrete curbing much thought, it serves many important functions.
The Purposes of Concrete Curbing
Concrete curbing can help in a variety of ways, including:
- Defines the edge of the parking lot
- Prevents cars from running off the edge of a parking lot
- Separates parking or driving areas from pedestrian only areas
- Protects landscape areas
- Helps to retain parking lots on inclines
As you can see, choosing the right concrete curbing is actually a pretty important part of your paving project.
Types of Concrete Curbing Installation
There are several types of concrete curbing solutions available.
18 inch vertical curb is very durable. On the surface you will see a 6 inch tall by 6 inch wide curb, but this curbing extends 12 inches into the ground making it virtually immovable.
6 inch concrete permacurb is also available. This type of concrete curbing is used in low traffic areas and is poured on the surface so that it stands 6 inches tall and 6 inches wide but does not extend underground. Although cheaper, concrete permacurb is not as strong and durable as 18 inch vertical curb.
Another option is concrete curb and gutter. This is a 6 inch by 6 inch curb poured on top of a 2 foot wide concrete gutter and extends 10 inches into the ground, making it very durable. Concrete curb and gutter is used to help direct water runoff towards catch basins. Concrete curb and gutter can also be made as a ramp (known as “roll curb”) to allow access to a driveway or access road.
Lastly there is “S” curb. S curb is an 18 inch vertical curb that has 6 inches of curb on the surface with a 12 inch tall footing underground. Additionally it has a sidewalk poured with it so that it becomes one solid unit.
As you can see there are many types of concrete curbing and their applications vary. But don’t worry, we don’t expect you to be a concrete curbing expert.
